As you are aware, there is a significant problem with a sewage odor in Heritage South, particularly in the area of Curling Creek Drive. The HOA Advisory Team has been working with various entities attempting to get a resolution to the problem.

The Union County Board of Commissioners hired an engineering company last year to assess the problem and propose potential solutions. At the Union County Commissioner's meeting held on February 5, 2024, John Shutak, Union County Water, Engineering Division Director gave a presentation that explained the source of the problem and proposed solutions.  This is not a simple problem and the solution(s) are not simple but here are the main points:

  • There were three alternatives presented:

  • Vapor Phase Treatment

  • Modification or Relocation of Force Main Discharge

  • Liquid Phase Treatment

  • Recommendation: Two stage approach

  • Primary - Liquid Phase treatment upstream of the discharge location to reduce the concentration of odor causing compounds

  • Secondary – Vapor Phase treatment at discharge manhole

  • Manhole scrubber inserts and filter media

  • Liquid Phase treatment also aids in mitigating corrosion in the collection system

The presentation provided explanatory diagrams, cost estimates and showed where work might be required.  For a better understanding, see the attached presentation.  The Commissioners will now take the alternatives & recommendations into consideration.  We hope to hear more at a future Board meeting.

The full presentation is attached to the notification email.
